Dennis Kimetto ran 2:02:57 at the Berlin Marathon today to break the world record by 26 seconds and become the first person on any course to run under 2:03. Shalane Flanagan came up short in her bid to break Deena Kastor's U.S. record of 2:19:36. Flanagan finished third in 2:21:14. Ethiopian Tirfi Tsegaye won in 2:20:18.
Kimetto stalked the three elite men's pacemakers for the majority of the race as the field passed the half marathon mark in 61:45. Mutai ratcheted up the pace at the 30-kilometer mark when the pacemakers stepped aside. The next 5K was covered in a scorching 14:10, and it was then that Kimetto broke Mutai and powered on to the finish.
