Tick-borne encephalitis vaccine is a vaccine used to prevent tick-borne encephalitis (TBE). The disease is most common in Central and Eastern Europe, and Northern Asia. More than 87% of people who receive the vaccine develop immunity. It is not useful following the bite of an infected tick.
How long does the TBE vaccine last?
The vaccination course consists of three doses (injections) of vaccine. You should aim to have the first injection at least one month before you travel. You will need at least 2 doses to provide you with adequate protection for your trip. A third injection will offer you protection for about 3 years.

How much is the tick vaccine in Switzerland?
In Switzerland, this applies to all cantons except the cantons of Geneva and Ticino. The vaccination costs around CHF 200 and is available at a doctor's office or a pharmacy. The mandatory health insurance covers the costs of the vaccination if it is carried out by a doctor.
Does the TBE vaccine prevent Lyme?
The TBE vaccine can only protect you from the TBE virus, but not from Lyme disease, which is a much more common consequence of tick bites. Research has shown that most people who get vaccinated develop antibodies against the TBE virus. These antibodies stop the TBE virus from spreading within the body.
